Types of Bone Grafting Procedures
The location and severity of bone loss, along with your treatment plan and goals, will determine the type of bone grafting procedure needed. At Oral Surgery Services, we create a custom-made treatment plan for each of our patients — we will recommend the bone grafting procedure that best aligns with your goals for treatment and outcome.
We perform the following bone grafting procedures:
- A sinus lift adds bone to the area between the upper jaw and the sinus cavity. This is a common bone grafting procedure for patients who need one or more dental implants in the upper arch.
- Sometimes, a bone graft is performed immediately following an extraction in order to preserve the bone and prevent any loss. This type of procedure is known as socket preservation.
- A ridge expansion adds bone to the alveolar ridge so that it can receive dental implants.
- Severe loss of bone due to injury or trauma, gum disease, tumor, or birth defect may require major bone grafting to replace or restore the missing bone.
- Nerve repositioning is a high-risk procedure that requires repositioning the alveolar nerve so that it avoids potential damage from a dental implant. The alveolar nerve is responsible for sensation in the chin and lower lip.
